If you require vision correction, your eye doctor can recommend eyeglasses and contact lenses. You can benefit from convenience and clear vision if you wear contact lenses.

Most people marvel when they wear contact lenses for the first time. The crisp, clear vision and enhanced visual details offer a new experience. Here are tips for adjusting to a new vision experience for new contact lens wearers.

Adjusting To Contact Lenses

If you are wearing contact lenses for the first time, your eyes will go through an adjustment period. Most people experience some side effects for the first 10 to 12 days, which is normal. The effects include blurry vision, eye fatigue, and discomfort.

The contact lens type or material will determine how long it takes to adjust. It is easier to adjust to wearing soft contact lenses than rigid, gas-permeable lenses. Keep the lenses on as instructed to enjoy the new visual experience.

Relax When Inserting Lenses

Proper contact lens wear should leave your eyes feeling comfortable with enhanced vision. Most new users worry they will scratch their eyes when inserting their contacts. There is also the fear of lenses getting stuck behind the eye.

You may feel nervous, but you should not worry about touching your eye as long as your hands are clean. Your inner eyelids connect to the back of the eye. Do not worry about the lens disappearing in the eye. You will receive instructions on proper lens wear and care during lens fitting.

Keep Your Contact Lenses Clean

Your eye doctor will give you instructions about proper lens care. The instructions are specific to your type of contact lenses. Use the recommended solution to rub and rinse your lenses every time you remove them. You should never change your lens products without checking with your doctor.

Place the lenses in a fresh solution for storage. Ensure you use the right storage case for your lenses. Do not reuse old solutions or top up solutions in the case. Always pour out the used solution and rinse the lens case before leaving it to air-dry.

Replace Your Lenses As Instructed

You can get daily-disposable, continuous-wear, or multiple-use lenses when choosing contact lenses. You will not have to worry about cleaning your lenses each night if you wear daily disposables. You remove and throw away the used lenses and wear a fresh pair daily.

If you choose multiple-use contacts, wear them for the recommended time. It could be weekly, monthly, or longer. Never wear your lenses longer than prescribed, as it could harm your eyes. Never sleep with your contacts unless you have continuous-wear lenses.

When To Visit The Eye Doctor

If you experience severe discomfort, discontinue use and visit your eye doctor. Severe side effects could be from using the wrong solution or failing to wash your hands before touching your lenses. Wearing the lenses for longer than instructed or storing them in the wrong conditions can also cause problems. In some cases, the discomfort may be due to lens defects or the wrong lens type or brand.

Always dispose of your lenses correctly in the proper garbage receptacle. Do not place your lenses in the drainage system. Getting used to your new contact lenses can take a week or two.
